The infographic that I created is a a continuing effort to provide context and background information for students as they read through chapters of the book "Stamped" by Jason Reynolds.  In this particular project I wanted to highlight examples from the civil rights era of each of what the book lists as anti-racist, assimilationist, and segregationist, which we have been discussing all unit.

The chapter that this will accompany is one that speaks about a variety of topics during the 1950s and 60s but specifically mentions both MLK Jr. and Malcolm X, although it only provides some interesting facts about each without really getting into their backstory.  I tried to expand on those interesting points with facts I thought my students would appreciate/remember.

For the pictures, I tried to use some of the more well known photos of each person, as I think that is a good jumping off point for getting to know figures that I do not believe most of the students are familiar with beyond just basic recognition.  I also tried to line up some of the achievements and facts of each person so that we as a class would be able to compare/contrast/analyze the events as well as the figures in total.  I think adding visuals is important because it A) humanizes the subjects, and puts a face to something that happened long enough ago that is might be somewhat abstract and B) evokes feelings about the issues that can be an important component towards building lasting understanding.

The last page is blank, but the students will have a list of quotes from each of the three men that we will attempt to decide who said what as a class.  This will be an opportunity for the class to identify statements of anti-racism, assimilation, and segregation.
