Blog Post #1

Hello, my name is Adam and I am currently in the final year of earning my Post-Bacc and licensure to teach English for 4th-12th grade.  Many of you who might be reading this have been in class with me for the last 2 semesters, but for the others I'll give you a quick rundown of what has brought me to this point on the off chance you are interested.

I graduated from the University of Iowa just over a decade ago and have spent most of the time since then managing bars and restaurants in both Iowa City and here in Milwaukee.  For a number of reasons I decided about 18 months ago that I wanted a change and immediately applied for entrance to UWM's school of education.   More than anything I have realized that, for me at least, making a positive impact in people's lives and in my overall community is the name of the game, for which restaurant management was unfulfilling.  In the last year I have met so many like minded people as both fellow students and instructors that I have been reassured that this is exactly where I am meant to be.

I am currently doing my field work/student teaching at Obama School for Career and Technical Education.  The student population is certainly a departure from my comfort zone (which I am ultimately excited about) so I am very excited to use this class to better prepare myself to meet their needs.

As far as an image that communicates who I am as a teacher, this may be a cop-out.  The truth is that before last week, it had been well over a decade since I'd set foot into a high school classroom.  And since that time I have been thrown many curveballs that have already made me re-asses my teaching habits and philosophies that I still feel like a blank canvas yet to have any permanent markings.  Hopefully in a month or two this picture will change.

The link I chose is actually just a Google book preview to Booklists compendium of top YA books since 2000.  The book is for purchase but also available at pretty much every public library.  I found it very useful to help in selecting YA books for a previous class and would suggest that anyone who has questions about a possible book to look it up on Booklist to see what they say about it.
